BERNARD BOUTET DE MONVEL

1881 – 1949

Bernard Boutet de Monvel was born in Paris to a well-known artist and illustrator at the time, Maurice Boutet de Monvel. The young Bernard also became a painter and illustrator, his early works heavily indebted to his father’s influence. He developed a more personal style over time. In 1900, Bernard began to study painting, traveling to Florence, and began to show in Parisian Salons.

In the twenties and thirties he provided illustrations for Harper’s Bazaar, the most prestigious and lucrative publications to work for at the time. He also continued to have success with his painting and showed at exhibitions around the world. He came to be known for both landscape and portrait painting, but gradually specialized in portraits and cityscapes. He also illustrated books and worked for fashion magazines. Bernard is considered an Art Deco artist, although he didn’t categorize himself in this manner, and he has also been called ‘hyperrealistic.’ He was always moving around, but he came to the U.S. for a time in his later years and became interested in painting views of New York City, among other things. He died in a plane crash in 1949.
